Golf Gloves, A Buyers Guide To Help You Decide

Golf gloves are the only thing between the player and the club hitting the ball. Some golfers wear two, and some don`t wear any at all. It doesn`t really matter, all that`s important that you get a good one that is comfortable on your hand.

So Why in The World Do We Need a Glove to Play Golf?

Why do you need a glove you ask, well golf gloves have two main purposes 1) is to allow the golfer to get a good grip on the club to help prevent from twisting, spining or sliping in your hand without adding any extra pressure. 2) is to prevent blisters or sores on your hands, this is one of a golfers' biggest enemys!

Maintenance and How to Take Care of Them?

Most glove manufacturers suggest right on the package to put the glove right back in the original package after each round. This helps it keep its shape and prolongs its life, but most of us don't do this and simply throw the glove in one of the pockets in our golf bag.

To help make the glove last as long as posible its is important to maintain it properly by laying the glove out flat and keeping it in a dry breathable package. This prevents drying, cracking and splitting. It is a good idea to have two gloves so that you can alternate them from day to day. This will help both of them last longer.

What Hand Do You Wear It On?

Right handed players wear a glove on their left hand.

Some Players even wear them on both hands. "Tommy 2 Gloves" has made a big name for himself on the PGA tour(and earned some big endorsements) for wearing 2 gloves, but it's not common

How Important is Size?

Size is everything, because if you get the wrong size and the glove is too loose the club will twist and move at the top of your swing and at impact. It is important that you get one that fits snug on your hand but is not to tight. They are made of leather and will stretch and loosen up with continual use.

Gloves are made in styles for men and women and come in a few different sizes. The sizes are XS, S, M, ML, L, XL. They also come in a different widths for wider and thinner hands.

How Come We Need Just One Glove?

The main reason is due to the grip we use to hold on to the club. The overlap or Vardon grip works out that only a portion of the upper hand is on or gripping the club at all times throughout the swing, therefor the need for 2 gloves is not neccessary. The other thing is it would be quite expensive if you have to replace 2 gloves all the time.

What Can Your Golf Glove Tell You In Terms Of Your Game?

You can learn a couple things from simply looking at your used golf gloves. First, if you notice any wearing or scuffing on the glove at palm pad above your baby finger it means that there is some movement or loss of control of the club at the top of the backswing. This will cause friction and wear on the glove.

Second, if you notice any scuffing or wear on the front of your thumb it tells you that you are gripping the club too tight and putting alot of pressure on the top of the club, not good!

What Are They Made Of?

Gloves are mainly made out of soft cabretta leather that is flexable and breathable. Some of the better gloves also now have a breathable stretch material on the top of the fingers or over the knuckles. It helps to wick away moisture and allows for more breathability and a better fit, prolonging the life of the glove itself.
